All FAQ
You need to contact your local service provider. You can also call us for further information. The service you would request would be Caller ID Block. There should not normally be a charge for this service. If you have an unlisted phone number, you should request that your telephone number be blocked.

Q. Can I stop calls from those hiding their ID?

A. Yes
All FAQ
Sometimes telemarketing and other companies do not want to reveal their identity to those they call. You can request "Anonymous Call Rejection". This will stop you from receiving calls from any company or individual who does not want to reveal their identity.

Q. Can I stop telemarketers in NY?
All FAQ
A. Register in the NY "Do Not Call" Registry

You can register for a period of three years. This can prevent most unwanted telemarketing calls, but will not stop all sales calls. Once you are registered you may still receive calls from: Charitable organizations, Religious corporations, Political parties and committees, Companies with whom you have a prior business relationship, Telemarketers who wish to arrange for a face-to-face before concluding a sales transaction Violators are subject to a penalty of up to $2,000.

Q. What's the best calling card deal?
All FAQ
A. You have to shop!
You have to be careful about surcharges. Sometimes low rates shown on pre-paid calls can be offset by high surcharges on every call. We know about the best deals for cards that can be tied together with your phone service. The best deal depends upon your calling patterns. Recently we came across a good deal at Sams Club (a little over 4 cents per minute, without surcharges for a 500 minute card). There is a surcharge for pay phone usage.
Q. What's the best deal? All FAQ
A. A flat rate program
The best deal we have come across for those doing a lot of long distance calling is a flat-rate service for just $69.95. This includes up to 5,000 minutes a month.

Q. How can I stop being "slammed"?
All FAQ
A. Request a "PIC freeze"
"Slamming" is when a telephone company changes your carrier without your permission. Sometimes this is by fraudulent means. You can contact your local carrier and request that a third party cannot change your carriers. You would be the only one authorized to make changes in the future.

Q. Who gets the 800# pay phone surcharges?
A. The local telephone company. All FAQ
When you make an 800 number call from a pay phone, the local telephone company needs to recover the cost of providing local access. Typically this fee is 35 cents. This fee can also apply to calling cards and pre-paid calling cards.

Q. Interlata, Interstate, Intrastate?
All FAQ
A. There are five different call types.
Local calls are the most common.
Interlata calls are within your region, but are subject to higher charges than local rates. Usually such calls will be within your own area code.
Intrastate calls are within your own State. Since Intrastate calls are subject to different taxes than Interstate calls, it can sometimes be more expensive to call within your own State!
Interstate calls are outside your State.
International calls are outside the United States
Theoretically you could have a different company handling each type of call. However, monthly fees or minimum call volume make it more common to choose one company of local calls and a second company for the other calls. We would be happy to discuss your particular calling needs and recommend the best plan for you.

Q. What are the billed extra charges?
All FAQ
A. A bill has several additional charges:
Enhanced 911 (Communities that have enhanced 911 calling are allowed to charge 35 cents per line)
Single Bill Fee: If your local phone company bills your long distance fees from another company. This charge may be added to your bill.

Q. Where can I find out about phone scams?
A. buywny.com has information All FAQ
