Avoid calling card Surcharges: Rather than using a calling card to call back to your office or home, consider setting up an 800 number.  There is usually no setup fee or monthly fee.  You just pay for the calls, which is usually much less than per call surcharges.

Transfer calls between locations: You can transfer calls between one location and another by pressing just two buttons on the phone.

Use a FAX service: Rather than having a dedicated FAX line, you can use a FAX service that receives faxes.

Conference calls: Avoid face to face meetings.

Video conferencing: Avoids out-of-town trips.
Additional numbers, not lines: If you would like to have the benefit of multiple lines without the cost, consider a distinctive ring service.  You can have up to three different rings on a single line for about $5 additional per month.  One ring could be for a home office, another for the kids, and the third for other calls.

Have calls transfer to cell phones: If you use a dial up Internet service and do not want to miss calls, you can arrange for a call forwarding if busy service to your cell phone.  If you have a private line at the office and want to have calls redirected to your cell phone when you are not in the office, you can have redirection from your private line, after a number of rings.
